Central Lakes State Trail stretches 55 miles through the heart of central Minnesota, connecting the towns of Fergus Falls and Osakis along a smooth, paved corridor that ranks among the longest continuously paved trails in the state. Built on a former Burlington Northern railroad bed, the trail passes through a landscape defined by rolling prairie, glacial lakes, and small-town charm that captures rural Minnesota at its best.
Cyclists, walkers, and inline skaters share the trail during warmer months, while snowmobilers and cross-country skiers take over in winter. The flat, well-maintained surface makes it accessible to riders of all skill levels, from families with young children to long-distance touring cyclists. Along the way, trail towns like Dalton, Ashby, and Battle Lake offer rest stops, local restaurants, and lakeside parks where you can refuel and cool off.
The surrounding lake country is the real draw here. Dozens of lakes dot the corridor, and the trail passes close enough to several that you can combine a ride with a swim or a fishing stop. Otter Tail County alone boasts over 1,000 lakes, and many are just a short detour from the path.
Late June through September offers the best riding conditions, with warm days and long daylight hours. Fall brings quieter trails and vivid color. Expect a peaceful, uncrowded experience even at peak season—this isn’t a tourist-heavy destination, and that’s exactly the point. Bring water, sunscreen, and a willingness to linger in the small towns along the way.
