Tettegouche State Park stretches across nearly 9,000 acres of Minnesota’s rugged North Shore, where the Baptism River carves through ancient basalt before tumbling 60 feet over High Falls — the tallest waterfall entirely within the state. The park sits along the Lake Superior shoreline in Lake County, offering dramatic cliff faces, dense boreal forest, and four inland lakes that remain wonderfully uncrowded.

The centerpiece hike leads to High Falls, a 1.5-mile trail from the parking area that rewards visitors with a thundering cascade, especially impressive during spring snowmelt. Shovel Point, a rocky promontory jutting into Lake Superior, offers one of the most photographed vistas on the North Shore — a short, accessible walk with panoramic views of the lake’s endless horizon and the park’s sheer rhyolite cliffs rising from the water.

Beyond the signature viewpoints, Tettegouche delivers serious backcountry opportunities. Over 23 miles of hiking trails wind through birch and spruce forests, connecting to remote lakes where paddlers can canoe without motorboat traffic. Winter transforms the park into a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing destination, with frozen waterfalls drawing ice climbers.

The park offers both drive-in and cart-in campsites, plus four rustic lakeside cabins originally built as a fishing camp in the 1910s. These book quickly — reserve well in advance for summer weekends.

Visit in early October for peak fall color against Lake Superior’s steel-blue backdrop, or in spring when the waterfalls run at full force and the crowds haven’t arrived yet.
