Temperance River State Park sits along Minnesota’s North Shore in Cook County, where the Temperance River carves through ancient volcanic rock before emptying into Lake Superior. The park’s 1,134 acres hold some of the most dramatic gorge scenery on the shore — deep, narrow chasms where the river drops through a series of hidden waterfalls and cauldron-shaped potholes sculpted over thousands of years.

Fall brings peak color to the birch and maple forests, making September and early October the most popular time to visit. Summer offers the fullest range of activities, though the river runs highest — and most impressively — during spring snowmelt.
