Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
Minnesota (Lake County)
Perched on the rugged North Shore of Lake Superior in Lake County, Minnesota, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park spans 2,112 acres of dramatic shoreline, dense boreal forest, and one of the most photographed landmarks in the Upper Midwest. The historic Split Rock Lighthouse, built in 1910 after a devastating series of shipwrecks, crowns a 130-foot cliff and remains the park’s centerpiece — though the surrounding landscape deserves equal attention.
Hikers can explore eight miles of trails winding through birch and spruce forests, with several routes leading to Superior’s cobblestone beaches and towering basalt cliffs. The Day Hill Trail offers panoramic lake views, while the Little Two Harbors trail descends to a sheltered pebble beach perfect for skipping stones and watching ore boats pass. In winter, the trails convert to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes through a snow-hushed boreal landscape.
The park offers cart-in campsites tucked along the lakeshore — no traditional drive-in camping here, which keeps things quieter and more secluded. Backpack sites along the Superior Hiking Trail provide even deeper solitude. Reserve early for summer weekends, as these sites fill fast.
Fall draws the biggest crowds, when the hardwood canopy blazes gold and crimson against Superior’s steel-blue water. But September through mid-October also brings the Edmund Fitzgerald memorial beacon lighting, a haunting annual tradition. Summer offers the longest days for hiking, while winter delivers stark beauty and near-empty trails. Whenever you visit, dress in layers — Superior makes its own weather.
