Onaway State Park
Michigan (Presque Isle County)
Tucked along the shores of Black Lake in Presque Isle County, Onaway State Park offers 158 acres of northern Michigan woodland and waterfront that feel refreshingly uncrowded. Black Lake — one of the largest inland lakes in the Lower Peninsula — is the main draw here, with warm summer water temperatures and a sandy swimming beach that families return to year after year.
Fishing is a standout activity, with Black Lake known for its walleye, smallmouth bass, and northern pike. A boat launch provides easy access to the water, and shore fishing along the park’s frontage is productive during early morning and evening hours. Beyond the lake, trails wind through mixed hardwood and conifer forest, offering solid options for hiking and wildlife watching — keep an eye out for bald eagles, which nest in the area.
The campground is smaller and more intimate than many Michigan state parks, with sites set among mature trees that provide natural shade and privacy. Its manageable size means a quieter atmosphere, especially midweek. Reservations are recommended for peak summer weekends from late June through August.
The best time to visit is July and August for swimming and warm-weather camping, though fall color season in late September and early October transforms the surrounding forest into a spectacular display. Spring visitors will find excellent fishing as the lake warms.
Onaway State Park rewards those looking for a low-key northern Michigan getaway — great water, good fishing, and the kind of peaceful setting that bigger parks can’t match.
