Cheboygan State Park
Michigan (Cheboygan County)
Cheboygan State Park sits at the mouth of the Cheboygan River where it meets Lake Huron, offering 1,250 acres of diverse northern Michigan landscape in Cheboygan County. The park’s standout feature is its shoreline — nearly a mile of sandy Lake Huron beach that stays uncrowded even in peak summer, plus views across the Straits of Mackinac toward Mackinac Island on clear days.
The park preserves several distinct ecosystems within its borders. Hikers can explore roughly six miles of trails that wind through mature hardwood forests, open meadows, and along the edges of coastal wetlands. Birders should bring binoculars — the wetland areas attract herons, osprey, and migrating warblers in spring and fall. In winter, the trails convert to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes through quiet, snow-covered woods.
Fishing draws visitors year-round. The Cheboygan River and Duncan Bay produce walleye, pike, and smallmouth bass, while Lake Huron’s shoreline offers opportunities for wading anglers targeting perch and salmon during seasonal runs.
The park’s campground provides sites among mature trees with reasonable spacing for privacy. Reservations are recommended for July and August weekends, when northern Michigan tourism peaks.
The best time to visit depends on what you’re after — summer for swimming and beach days, early fall for color tours and solitude, winter for Nordic skiing. Late June through mid-September delivers the warmest water temperatures, but September’s smaller crowds and golden light make a strong case for shoulder-season visits.
