Burt Lake State Park sits on the southeastern shore of Burt Lake in Cheboygan County, offering 125 acres of prime Northern Michigan waterfront. The park’s main draw is its expansive sandy beach along one of the state’s largest inland lakes — a stretch of clear, shallow water that’s ideal for families with young swimmers.

The lake itself connects to the Inland Waterway, a historic 38-mile chain of rivers and lakes that links Cheboygan to Conway. Kayakers and boaters can paddle from Burt Lake through Mullett Lake and beyond, making this park a launching point for multi-day water trails that few other Michigan parks can match.

Fishing here is serious. Burt Lake holds walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and perch, with walleye runs drawing anglers from across the Midwest in spring and fall. A boat launch within the park provides direct lake access.

The campground offers sites tucked among hardwoods and pines, many within walking distance of the beach. Fall camping is particularly rewarding — the surrounding forests light up with color in late September through mid-October, and the summer crowds thin out considerably.

Beyond the water, the park connects to nearby trails and is a short drive from the Headlands International Dark Sky Park, one of only a handful of certified dark sky preserves in the country.

Visit between late June and early September for warm-water swimming, or target May and October for quieter fishing and fall color. Expect a well-maintained, family-friendly park with a distinctly Up North Michigan feel.
