Tucked along the Lake Huron shoreline in Presque Isle County, Hoeft State Park is one of Michigan’s quieter gems — a 301-acre retreat built around one of the longest undeveloped sandy beaches on the lake. That mile-long stretch of shoreline, framed by dense cedar and pine forest, draws visitors who want Great Lakes beauty without the crowds found further south.

The beach is the centerpiece, but the park’s trail system deserves attention too. A network of paths winds through a mix of hardwood and conifer forest, with the roughly 4-mile loop offering a pleasant half-day hike that stays relatively flat and accessible. In winter, these same trails welcome cross-country skiers and snowshoers, making Hoeft a legitimate four-season destination.

The campground offers rustic and semi-modern sites nestled among the trees, many within a short walk of the water. Sites fill up on peak summer weekends but remain surprisingly available midweek and into September — arguably the best window to visit, when Lake Huron’s water is warmest and the crowds thin out. Fall color season in late September through October is another strong draw, with the surrounding forests putting on a reliable show.

Birdwatchers will find the park productive, particularly during spring and fall migration along the Lake Huron flyway. Anglers can cast from shore or launch from nearby access points.

Hoeft rewards visitors who appreciate simplicity — no waterparks or mini-golf, just clean water, quiet trails, and dark skies worth staying up for.
