Island Lake State Recreation Area
Michigan (Livingston County)
Spanning 4,000 acres across Livingston County, Island Lake State Recreation Area offers one of southeastern Michigan’s best escapes into rolling terrain, dense hardwood forests, and the winding Huron River. Located just off I-96 between Brighton and Milford, it’s close enough for a day trip from Detroit or Ann Arbor yet wild enough to feel genuinely removed.
The Huron River is the centerpiece here. Paddlers can launch canoes and kayaks for a leisurely float through marshlands teeming with herons, turtles, and the occasional bald eagle. The river also draws anglers targeting bass, bluegill, and pike. On land, over 14 miles of trails wind through meadows and oak-hickory forests, welcoming hikers, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers depending on the season. Equestrian riders get their own dedicated trail system, and a hot-air balloon launch area adds an unexpected twist you won’t find at most Michigan parks.
Spring wildflower displays and fall color make those shoulder seasons particularly rewarding, but summer weekends bring the biggest crowds to the swimming beach at Kent Lake. Winter transforms the park into a quiet, snow-covered landscape ideal for snowshoeing and fat-tire biking.
A large picnic area with shelters makes Island Lake a solid choice for group gatherings, and the park’s proximity to the Kensington Metropark trail network means you can easily extend your adventure. Whether you’re casting a line at dawn or watching a balloon rise over the tree line, Island Lake delivers an accessible taste of Michigan’s outdoor character.
