Built in 1883, the Galveston South Jetty Light marks the entrance to Galveston Harbor along the granite jetties constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The iron tower guided vessels through one of Texas’s busiest ports during the late 19th century. It survived the devastating 1900 Galveston Hurricane, adding to its historical significance. Now deactivated, the lighthouse is not open to the public and cannot be climbed, but it remains a striking landmark visible from the South Jetty. Golden hour and sunset offer the best photography conditions, with dramatic Gulf backdrops. Nearby, visitors can explore the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa, and the Strand Historic District.
