Standing on Ship Island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, this historic lighthouse was first built in 1853 to guide vessels through the treacherous Ship Island Pass. The tower survived Civil War conflict, when Confederate and Union forces battled for control of the island, though it suffered damage and was later rebuilt. The lighthouse was deactivated and is not currently open to the public, so visitors cannot climb the tower. Best photography conditions come during golden hour, with the lighthouse silhouetted against Gulf sunsets. Nearby attractions include Fort Massachusetts, a Civil War-era brick fortification on the island, and the pristine beaches of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Ferry service from Gulfport provides seasonal access to the island.
