Brenton Reef Light

Brenton Reef Light

Narragansett Bay · Rhode Island

Rising from the waters off Narragansett, Rhode Island, Brenton Reef Light has marked the treacherous reef at the entrance to Narragansett Bay since 1962. This Texas tower-style lighthouse replaced an earlier lightship that served the area for decades. The modern steel structure, standing on four legs above the waves, represents mid-20th century engineering designed to withstand harsh Atlantic conditions.

Now decommissioned and inactive, Brenton Reef Light is not open to the public and cannot be climbed. The best photography opportunities come during golden hour from nearby Fort Adams State Park or by charter boat. While visiting, explore Newport’s famous mansions, sail Narragansett Bay, or visit Castle Hill Lighthouse just minutes away.
