Oakland Harbor Light

Built in 1890, Oakland Harbor Light has guided ships through the busy Oakland Estuary for over a century. This modest wooden lighthouse originally marked the entrance to Oakland’s commercial harbor during the city’s rapid growth as a major West Coast port. Despite its age, the light remains active, maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as a functioning navigational aid.

The lighthouse is not open to the public and visitors cannot climb the tower, but it’s easily photographed from the surrounding waterfront. Golden hour and blue hour offer the best light, with the San Francisco skyline as a dramatic backdrop.
