Standing guard over Lake Huron’s treacherous Thunder Bay since 1832, this historic lighthouse is one of Michigan’s earliest navigational aids. Built to guide ships through waters notorious for shipwrecks, it remains an active aid to navigation managed by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The light is not open to the public, and the island is accessible only by private boat. Photographers will find the best conditions during summer golden hours, when warm light plays against the weathered stone tower and surrounding Lake Huron waters.
