Negwegon State Park sprawls across 4,118 acres of Lake Huron shoreline in Alcona and Alpena Counties, offering one of Michigan’s most remote and undeveloped coastal experiences. Unlike the state’s more popular parks, Negwegon rewards visitors willing to navigate its rough, unpaved access roads with miles of secluded sandy beaches, rocky coves, and dense boreal forest that feels genuinely wild.

The park’s relative isolation is its greatest asset. Hikers can explore over 10 miles of trails winding through hardwood and conifer forests, past wetlands, and along stretches of Lake Huron shoreline where you may not see another person all day. Birdwatchers come for migrating warblers and shorebirds, while the undeveloped beaches make for exceptional spots to watch sunrises over the lake.

The road into Negwegon is notoriously rough — a sandy, potholed two-track that can challenge low-clearance vehicles, especially after rain. Come prepared with higher clearance or patience. There are no developed campgrounds within the park, though rustic backcountry camping is available for those who want a true wilderness overnight. The nearest full-service campgrounds are at nearby Harrisville State Park.

Summer and early fall are the best times to visit, with warm water temperatures in July and August and spectacular fall color by late September. Bring everything you need — there are no concessions, running water, or cell service inside the park.

Negwegon is Michigan’s quiet secret: a place where the shoreline still belongs to the herons, the dunes, and whoever is willing to earn the drive in.
