Tucked along the Lake Huron shoreline near Alpena in Presque Isle County, Rockport State Recreation Area spans 4,237 acres of rugged northern Michigan landscape where limestone karst formations meet crystal-clear Great Lakes waters. This is one of Michigan’s most geologically fascinating parks — sinkholes, collapsed sea caves, and fossilized coral reefs tell a story millions of years in the making.

The park’s crown jewel is its shoreline. Miles of rocky beach give way to underwater preserves popular with snorkelers and scuba divers exploring submerged limestone ledges and shallow shipwrecks in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary nearby. Above water, hikers can follow trails through dense hardwood forests and along dramatic bluff overlooks where the lake stretches to the horizon.

Mountain biking, bird watching, and wildlife photography draw visitors year-round. The diverse habitat supports bald eagles, osprey, and migratory warblers that pass through each spring and fall. Hunters frequent the area during deer and small game seasons, taking advantage of the vast, undeveloped terrain.

While Rockport does not offer developed campgrounds with modern amenities, its backcountry character is part of the appeal. Nearby Negwegon State Park and private campgrounds in the Alpena area provide overnight options for those who want a base camp.

Visit from late May through October for the best conditions. Summer brings warm water for swimming, while autumn transforms the hardwood canopy into a spectacular display of color against the deep blue lake. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for entry.
