Middle Island Light

Middle Island Light

Lake Huron · Michigan

Standing guard over Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay since 1905, Middle Island Light marks one of the Great Lakes’ most treacherous stretches of water. The 71-foot tower was built to warn vessels away from the rocky shoals surrounding Middle Island, located about five miles offshore from Alpena. The light remains active as a navigational aid, though the station is not open to the public and cannot be climbed. Its remote island setting makes it a favorite subject for photographers, best captured from charter boats during golden hour in summer or early fall. Nearby, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and its Underwater Preserve offer world-class shipwreck diving, while downtown Alpena provides charming shops and waterfront dining.
