Scarborough State Beaches

Stretching across 30 acres along Rhode Island’s southern coastline in Washington County, Scarborough State Beaches deliver one of the best ocean beach experiences in the state. The beach sits on a barrier spit between the Atlantic Ocean and a series of coastal salt ponds, giving visitors both crashing surf and calm, sheltered waters within walking distance of each other.

The main draw is straightforward: a wide, sandy Atlantic beach with consistent wave action that draws surfers, bodyboarders, and swimmers alike. The beach breaks here are approachable for beginners while still offering enough push to keep experienced surfers interested. Beyond the surf, the flat stretches of sand are ideal for volleyball, frisbee, and long walks along the shoreline. Fishing is popular at the quieter ends of the beach, particularly for striped bass and bluefish during seasonal runs.

The salt pond side offers a completely different pace — calmer waters suited for kayaking, paddleboarding, and wading with young children. Birdwatchers will find plenty to watch along the pond margins, where shorebirds and wading birds feed in the shallows.

Scarborough operates as a day-use beach with no on-site camping. Facilities include bathhouses, restrooms, and a concession stand during peak season. Parking fills early on summer weekends, so arriving before 10 AM is strongly recommended.

The best window runs from mid-June through early September, when water temperatures are warmest and lifeguards are on duty. Late September visits reward with thinner crowds and spectacular fall light over the ocean.
