Salty Brine State Beach
Tucked along the shore of Point Judith in Washington County, Salty Brine State Beach packs a surprising amount of charm into just 1.3 acres. Named after Rhode Island’s beloved weather forecaster, this compact state beach sits at the mouth of the Harbor of Refuge, offering visitors a front-row seat to one of the Ocean State’s most active waterways — fishing boats heading out at dawn, sailboats cutting across Narragansett Bay, and the Block Island Ferry gliding past on its daily run.
Don’t let the small footprint fool you. The beach’s sheltered position creates calmer waters than the open-ocean beaches nearby, making it a solid pick for families with younger kids or anyone who prefers swimming without battling heavy surf. The sandy beach drops off gradually, and lifeguards are on duty during summer months.
Beyond swimming, visitors come here to fish from the adjacent jetty, watch for shorebirds along the rocks, or simply park a chair and take in the constant boat traffic. The nearby Galilee fishing village puts fresh seafood within a five-minute walk — George’s of Galilee and Champlin’s are local institutions worth the visit.
Summer weekends from late June through Labor Day draw the biggest crowds, and parking fills early given the limited lot size. Weekday mornings or early September visits offer the best balance of warm water and breathing room. There is no camping on-site, but nearby Fishermen’s Memorial State Park provides campsites just minutes away.
