Roger Wheeler State Beach

Tucked along the southern shore of Washington County, Roger Wheeler State Beach packs a surprising amount of charm into its 27 acres. Known locally as Sand Hill Cove, this crescent-shaped beach sits in Narragansett and offers some of the calmest, most family-friendly swimming waters on Rhode Island’s coastline. A natural breakwater keeps the surf gentle, making it a go-to spot for families with young children who want to splash without battling big waves.

The fine, golden sand stretches wide enough to spread out even on busy summer weekends, and the gradual slope into the water means you can wade out a good distance before it gets deep. Beyond swimming, visitors enjoy beachcombing along the shoreline, building sandcastles, and picnicking at the tables scattered near the parking area. A playground sits just off the sand, giving kids another reason to resist leaving.

Roger Wheeler is a day-use beach with no camping on-site. Facilities include restrooms, outdoor showers, and a concession stand serving the usual boardwalk fare — fried clam strips, lemonade, and soft serve that tastes better with salt air on your skin.

The best time to visit is late June through early September, when lifeguards are on duty and water temperatures climb into the upper 60s and low 70s. Arrive before 10 AM on weekends to secure parking, as the lot fills quickly. Weekdays offer a noticeably quieter experience with the same beautiful water and views of Point Judith in the distance.
