Bandon State Natural Area

Perched along Oregon’s rugged South Coast, Bandon State Natural Area protects a striking stretch of shoreline where weathered sea stacks rise from the sand like ancient sentinels. The landscape here is raw and dramatic — tidepools teem with anemones and sea stars, while offshore rocks serve as haul-out spots for harbor seals and nesting sites for seabirds.

The area connects to some of the most photogenic beach walking on the entire Oregon Coast. Wander south from Face Rock Viewpoint and you’ll pass Table Rock, Cat and Kittens, and dozens of other named formations that catch golden light at sunset in ways that stop photographers mid-step. At low tide, the exposed reef shelves reveal a miniature world worth exploring slowly.

Beachcombing is excellent here, particularly after winter storms churn up agates and Japanese glass floats from the annual Finders Keepers event. Birdwatchers will find shorebirds working the tideline year-round, with migratory species peaking in spring and fall. The area also connects to trails winding through coastal shore pine forest and gorse-covered headlands.

No camping is available within the natural area itself, but Bullards Beach State Park sits just minutes north with full-service campsites, yurts, and horse camps.

Visit May through October for the calmest weather, though winter storms bring their own fierce beauty and the best beachcombing. Dress in layers regardless of season — the South Coast earns its reputation for horizontal rain even on days that start sunny.
