Alfred A. Loeb State Park
Oregon (South Coast County)
Alfred A. Loeb State Park sits along the banks of the Chetco River in Oregon’s South Coast region, just east of Brookings. What sets this park apart is its rare old-growth myrtlewood grove — one of the largest remaining stands of Oregon myrtle in the state. A short trail connects to the adjacent Redwood Nature Trail in Siskiyou National Forest, where you can walk among some of the northernmost coastal redwoods in the country. Few parks in Oregon offer that combination.
The Chetco River is the centerpiece of daily life here. In summer, the water runs clear and calm enough for swimming, kayaking, and fishing — steelhead and salmon runs draw anglers from fall through spring. Riverside trails wind through the myrtlewood canopy, making for shaded, easy hikes even on warm days.
The park offers 48 electrical hookup sites and 3 log cabins tucked among the trees. The cabins are a standout — rustic but well-maintained, with sleeping space for up to six. Sites sit close to the river, and many are shaded by the old-growth canopy overhead. Reservations are recommended for summer weekends and cabin stays year-round.
The best time to visit depends on what you’re after. Summer brings warm river days and comfortable camping weather. Fall and winter are quieter, with steelhead fishing and moody, green landscapes. Spring wildflowers fill the understory.
Expect a peaceful, unhurried park with genuine old-growth character — not a manicured campground, but something better.
