Pelican State Beach sits just south of the Oregon border in Smith River, Del Norte County, making it one of California’s northernmost beaches. At just 5.2 acres, this tiny state beach delivers something rare along the coast — solitude. There are no entrance fees, no parking lots, no facilities, and most days, no crowds. That’s exactly the point.

The beach stretches along a wild, undeveloped section of coastline where the Pacific crashes against dark sand and scattered driftwood. Beachcombing is the main draw here, with agates, shells, and sea glass rewarding those who look closely. Birdwatchers come for the shorebirds and seabirds — brown pelicans, the beach’s namesake, are a common sight gliding low over the surf. Fishing, photography, and simply watching the waves round out the activities.

Swimming is not recommended. The water is cold year-round, currents are strong, and there are no lifeguards. This is a contemplation beach, not a recreation beach.

The best time to visit is late summer through early fall, when Del Norte County sees its driest weather and fog burns off by midday. Spring brings wildflowers to the surrounding bluffs but also more rain. Winter storms are dramatic but can make the short access trail muddy.

There’s no camping at Pelican State Beach itself. Nearby Clifford Kamph Memorial Park and Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park offer campsites within a short drive.
