Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint sits along Oregon’s wild South Coast, where the Pistol River meets the Pacific Ocean in a dramatic collision of land and sea. This stretch of coastline is defined by massive sea stacks — towering rock formations that rise from the surf and sandy beach like ancient sentinels, creating one of the most photographed landscapes on the entire Oregon Coast.

The viewpoint offers sweeping panoramas from the highway pulloff, but the real reward comes from walking down to the beach itself. Wide, wind-swept sands stretch in both directions, littered with driftwood and framed by rugged headlands. Beachcombing here turns up agates, jasper, and the occasional piece of petrified wood. The consistent coastal winds have also made Pistol River famous in the windsurfing and kiteboarding world — the annual Pistol River Wave Bash draws competitors from across the globe to ride some of the gnarliest wave-sailing conditions on the West Coast.

Wildlife watchers should bring binoculars. Harbor seals haul out on the rocks, shorebirds work the tideline, and gray whales pass offshore during their spring and winter migrations. The tidepools around the sea stacks harbor starfish, anemones, and small crabs at low tide.

Visit between May and October for the calmest weather, though moody winter storms offer their own spectacular show. The viewpoint is a day-use stop — no camping facilities here — but nearby Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor and Harris Beach State Park offer developed campsites within a short drive.
