Cape Sebastian State Scenic Corridor
Oregon (South Coast County)
Cape Sebastian State Scenic Corridor rises 200 feet above the Pacific along Oregon’s wild southern coast, offering some of the most dramatic ocean views in the entire state. Standing at the cape’s summit, you can see nearly 50 miles in each direction on a clear day — north toward Gold Beach and south past the rugged headlands approaching the California border.
A 1.5-mile trail winds from the parking area down through a dense Sitka spruce forest to the beach below, where rocky tide pools and driftwood-strewn sand meet crashing surf. The descent is steep but well-maintained, and the payoff is a stretch of coastline that feels genuinely remote. Gray whale migration (December through June) makes the cape one of the better whale-watching perches on the South Coast, no binoculars required on good days.
Birders come for peregrine falcons that nest along the cliff faces, while photographers time visits for the golden-hour light that turns the sea stacks into silhouettes. The corridor itself is a drive-through experience along US-101, but the real reward goes to those who stop and walk.
There are no campgrounds within the corridor, though nearby Samuel H. Boardman and Harris Beach state parks offer excellent sites within a short drive. Facilities at the cape are limited to a parking area and trailhead — bring water and layers, as coastal wind and fog roll in fast even in summer.
Best time to visit: Late spring through early fall for wildflowers and clearer skies, or winter for storm watching and whale season.
