Storm King State Park
Rising dramatically above the Hudson River in Palisades County, Storm King State Park sprawls across nearly 2,000 acres of rugged terrain that has captivated hikers, artists, and history buffs since its establishment in 1922. The park sits within the Hudson Highlands, where ancient granite mountains plunge steeply into the river below, creating some of the most striking scenery in the Northeast.
The star attraction is the network of trails leading to panoramic overlooks. Storm King Mountain itself tops out around 1,340 feet, and the summit views — stretching across the Hudson Valley with Breakneck Ridge to the east and Newburgh Bay to the north — are genuinely stunning. The Stillman Trail and Howell Trail form a challenging loop that rewards fit hikers with multiple vantage points along exposed ridgelines.
Beyond hiking, the park draws rock scramblers, birders tracking migrating raptors along the river corridor, and photographers chasing golden-hour light on the highlands. Mountain biking is available on designated trails, and the surrounding area offers kayaking on the Hudson.
Camping availability is unconfirmed, so check with New York State Parks before planning an overnight stay. Nearby alternatives include Black Rock Forest and the Appalachian Trail corridor.
Visit in mid-October for peak fall foliage — the hillsides erupt in red and orange against the deep blue river. Spring wildflower season (late April through May) is equally rewarding with fewer crowds. Summer brings heat and humidity to the exposed ridges, so carry plenty of water and start early.
