High Tor State Park
New York (Palisades County)
Rising dramatically above the western shore of the Hudson River, High Tor State Park takes its name from the 832-foot volcanic peak that has inspired artists, playwrights, and hikers since long before the park’s establishment in 1943. Spanning 691 acres across Rockland County’s Palisades region, the park occupies a landscape shaped by ancient lava flows — the same Palisades Sill formation that defines this stretch of the Hudson Valley.
The park’s defining feature is the High Tor summit itself, accessible via a moderately challenging trail that rewards climbers with sweeping panoramic views of the Hudson River, Haverstraw Bay, and the distant Manhattan skyline. The Long Path, a major long-distance hiking trail stretching from the George Washington Bridge to the Catskills, passes directly through the park, making it a popular waypoint for thru-hikers and day-trippers alike.
Beyond hiking, visitors come for rock climbing on the trap rock cliffs, birdwatching along the ridgeline where raptors ride thermal updrafts, and quiet picnicking in the wooded lowlands. The park’s relatively undeveloped character is part of its appeal — this is a place for those who prefer trail solitude over crowded recreation areas.
Fall is the standout season, when the hardwood canopy ignites with color and the Hudson Valley views reach their sharpest clarity in the cool, dry air. Spring wildflower displays along the lower trails also draw repeat visitors.
Camping availability should be confirmed directly with the Palisades Interstate Park Commission before planning an overnight visit.
