Iona Island State Park
New York (Palisades County)
Tucked along the western shore of the Hudson River in Palisades County, Iona Island State Park offers 134 acres of tidal marsh, rocky uplands, and quiet waterfront unlike anything else in the lower Hudson Valley. Established in 1965, this former naval ammunition depot has traded its military past for one of the region’s most important bird sanctuaries, making it a destination birders return to season after season.
The island’s mix of freshwater tidal marsh and wooded uplands creates habitat for bald eagles, great blue herons, and dozens of migrating species that use the Hudson as a flyway. Spring and fall migrations bring the most dramatic sightings, but winter eagle watching from the causeway connecting Iona to the mainland has become a beloved tradition for locals and visitors alike.
Beyond birding, the park’s trails wind through forests that have slowly reclaimed old military structures, giving hikes an almost post-apocalyptic charm. Kayakers and canoeists paddle the marsh channels at high tide, exploring shallow waterways teeming with life. Fishing along the Hudson shoreline draws anglers after striped bass and white perch during their seasonal runs.
Note that portions of the island are restricted to protect nesting habitat, so check current access maps before your visit. The park operates as a day-use area with no developed camping facilities.
The best time to visit is mid-April through May, when migrating warblers fill the canopy and the marsh comes alive, or December through February for eagle watching along the frozen river corridor.
