Hudson Highlands State Park
New York (Taconic County)
Rising dramatically above the Hudson River, Hudson Highlands State Park protects nearly 8,900 acres of rugged terrain in Taconic County, New York. Established in 1970, the park encompasses some of the most striking scenery along the entire Hudson Valley—steep, forested ridgelines that plunge toward the river, offering views that have inspired painters and hikers for generations.
The park’s crown jewel is Breakneck Ridge, one of the most popular hikes in the Northeast. The scramble up exposed rock faces rewards with sweeping panoramas of the Hudson River, Storm King Mountain, and the surrounding highlands. It’s exhilarating but demanding—come prepared with sturdy footwear and water. For a less intense outing, the Cornish Estate Trail winds past the atmospheric ruins of a grand estate slowly being reclaimed by the forest, a quietly fascinating detour.
Beyond Breakneck, the trail network connects to longer routes through Bull Hill (Mount Taurus) and Sugarloaf Mountain, making multi-hour explorations easy to piece together. Birding is productive here, particularly during spring and fall raptor migrations when hawks ride thermals along the ridgeline.
Fall is the standout season—hardwood forests erupt in color against the dark river below—but spring wildflowers and summer swimming holes near the river’s edge each have their appeal. Winter hiking is possible but requires caution on icy rock scrambles.
The park is a day-use destination without developed campground facilities, so plan your overnight accommodations in nearby Cold Spring or Beacon, both charming Hudson Valley towns worth exploring.
