Highland Lakes State Park
New York (Palisades County)
Tucked into the rugged terrain of Palisades County, Highland Lakes State Park offers over 3,100 acres of rolling woodlands, rocky ridgelines, and secluded lakes that feel worlds away from the Hudson Valley’s more trafficked destinations. Established in 1964, the park remains one of New York’s quieter state parks — a genuine find for visitors who prefer solitude over crowds.
The landscape here is defined by the glacial lakes that give the park its name. Several small, wooded lakes dot the property, creating a patchwork of water and forest that supports excellent hiking, fishing, and wildlife observation. The trail system winds through mixed hardwood forests and across exposed ridges where views open up across the surrounding hills. Mountain biking and horseback riding are permitted on designated trails, making this a versatile destination for different types of outdoor enthusiasts.
Hunting is allowed in season across much of the park’s acreage, drawing upland bird and deer hunters each fall. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over the trails in winter, when the park sees very few visitors and the frozen lakes create a striking backdrop.
The best time to visit is mid-October, when the fall foliage across these hills is spectacular and the cooler temperatures make for ideal hiking conditions. Spring wildflower season, typically late April through May, is another strong window.
Camping availability has not been confirmed — check with the New York State Parks office before planning an overnight trip. Day-use access is straightforward and free.
