Schunnemunk State Park

Schunnemunk State Park

New York (Palisades County)

Rising above the Hudson Highlands, Schunnemunk Mountain State Park protects nearly 2,910 acres of rugged terrain in Orange County, New York — one of the region’s most rewarding yet underappreciated hiking destinations. Established in 2003, the park centers on Schunnemunk Mountain, a long ridge that tops out around 1,664 feet and offers some of the most dramatic geology in the Hudson Valley.

What sets Schunnemunk apart is its distinctive conglomerate rock formations — fields of purple and pink puddingstone that look almost otherworldly against the surrounding hardwood forest. The ridge’s open rock slabs deliver panoramic views stretching from the Catskills to the north all the way to the Manhattan skyline on clear days.

The park’s trail network covers roughly 25 miles, with the most popular route being the loop combining the Trestle Trail, Jessup Trail, and the ridge-top Western Ridge Trail. This 8-mile circuit hits all the highlights but demands solid footwear and decent fitness — expect rocky scrambles and steady elevation gain. The Dark Hollow Trail offers a shorter, less strenuous alternative for those easing into the terrain.

Camping information is not currently confirmed for Schunnemunk, so visitors should check with the Palisades Interstate Park Commission before planning an overnight trip. Day hiking is the primary draw here.

The best time to visit is mid-October, when the surrounding oak and maple canopy erupts in fall color and the cooler air makes the ridge climbs comfortable. Spring wildflower season, particularly late April through May, is another strong window. Summer hikes are doable but exposed sections of the ridge can be punishing in full sun.

One note: your facts list this under “Palisades County,” but there’s no county by that name in New York — the park sits in Orange County and is managed by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, which may be the source of that label. You may want to correct the county field in your data.
