Hook Mountain State Park
New York (Palisades County)
Rising dramatically above the western shore of the Hudson River, Hook Mountain State Park offers 676 acres of rugged terrain and sweeping river views that have drawn visitors since its establishment in 1911. Located in Rockland County along the Palisades, the park occupies a prominent rocky ridge that was once quarried for traprock before conservationists fought to protect it.
The park’s defining feature is the Hook Mountain summit trail, which climbs to panoramic overlooks where the Tappan Zee Bridge, Croton Point, and the distant Manhattan skyline come into view. The Long Path traverses the park’s ridgeline, connecting hikers to the broader trail network stretching from the George Washington Bridge northward through Nyack Beach and Haverstraw Beach state parks.
Hook Mountain is renowned as one of the premier hawk-watching sites in the Northeast. Each autumn, thousands of raptors — broad-winged hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, Cooper’s hawks, and occasional bald eagles — ride thermal updrafts along the ridge, drawing birders from across the region to the designated observation point near the summit.
Beyond hiking and birding, the park offers mountain biking on select trails and shoreline fishing along the Hudson. Picnic areas near the river provide a quieter alternative to the ridgeline climbs.
Spring wildflowers and fall foliage make April through November the ideal visiting window, with mid-September through October being especially rewarding for raptor migration. The terrain is rocky and moderately strenuous in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended. No camping facilities are available within the park.
