Tallman Mountain State Park
Tucked along the western bank of the Hudson River in Palisades County, Tallman Mountain State Park offers 687 acres of wooded hillsides, tidal marshland, and river views just 20 miles north of Manhattan. Established in 1928 as part of the Palisades Interstate Park system, it remains one of the most accessible escapes from the New York metro area while feeling genuinely removed from it.
The park’s standout feature is its varied terrain. A network of trails winds through hardwood forest and up to ridgeline overlooks where the Hudson stretches out below. The Piermont Marsh, a 1,000-acre tidal wetland bordering the park’s eastern edge, draws birders year-round — herons, egrets, and osprey are regulars. A paved bike path connects to the Long Path and the Piermont Pier, extending your options well beyond the park boundary.
Spring and fall are the best seasons here. Spring wildflowers carpet the forest floor in April and May, while October brings vivid foliage against the river backdrop. Summer is pleasant for picnicking and pool swimming at the park’s outdoor pool (open seasonally), though weekends draw crowds. Winter hiking is quiet and rewarding if you dress for it.
The park features picnic areas, playgrounds, tennis courts, and open fields for casual sports. Camping availability is not confirmed, so check with the Palisades Interstate Park Commission before planning an overnight stay.
Tallman Mountain works best as a day trip — come for the trails, stay for the views, and let the Hudson do the rest.
