Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park
Stretching across 216 acres in Taconic County, New York, Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park preserves one of the great engineering marvels of 19th-century America. Designated a State Historic Site in 1968, the park follows the route of the aqueduct that once carried fresh water from the Croton River to New York City — a feat of infrastructure that transformed urban life when it opened in 1842.
Today, the aqueduct’s path serves as a scenic linear trail that draws hikers, joggers, and history enthusiasts year-round. The packed-earth trail runs atop the buried aqueduct itself, offering a remarkably flat and accessible route through Hudson Valley landscapes — past stone ventilation towers, weirs, and other original structures that still stand along the corridor. Cyclists and cross-country skiers also make use of the trail in their respective seasons.
What makes this park genuinely special is the layering of experiences. You’re walking through shaded woodlands and open meadows with Hudson River views while literally standing on top of a buried engineering landmark. Interpretive markers along the route explain how the aqueduct worked and why it mattered.
Spring and fall are the best times to visit. Autumn foliage along the trail is striking, while spring wildflowers line the path before the tree canopy fills in. Summer visits are comfortable thanks to generous shade cover.
Camping availability has not been confirmed for this site, so contact the park directly before planning an overnight trip. Admission is free.
