Nyack Beach State Park
New York (Palisades County)
Tucked along the western shore of the Hudson River in Palisades County, Nyack Beach State Park packs a surprising amount of wild beauty into its 61 acres. Established in 1911, this narrow riverside park sits at the base of Hook Mountain, where steep wooded cliffs meet a rocky shoreline — creating a landscape that feels far removed from the suburbs just minutes away.
The park’s standout feature is its dramatic setting. A half-mile trail descends from the upper parking area through dense hardwood forest before opening onto a pebbly beach with sweeping views of the Hudson and the Tappan Zee. The contrast between the shaded canopy and the wide-open river is striking every time.
Hiking is the main draw here. The trail system connects to the Long Path, a major long-distance route that traces the Palisades ridge northward toward Hook Mountain State Park. Birdwatchers will find the river corridor productive during spring and fall migration, when warblers move through the canopy and raptors ride thermals above the cliffs. Fishing from the shoreline is another popular option, with striped bass running in season.
Camping availability has not been confirmed for this park, so check with New York State Parks before planning an overnight trip.
The best time to visit is mid-spring through early fall. October brings peak foliage along the Palisades that is genuinely spectacular from the waterline. Summer weekends draw crowds, so arrive early to secure parking. Winter access can be limited due to icy trail conditions.
