Blauvelt State Park
New York (Palisades County)
Tucked into the wooded hills of Rockland County, Blauvelt State Park offers 639 acres of quiet trails and forested terrain just a short drive from the Hudson Valley’s busiest corridors. Established in 1913, the park sits on land that once served as a military training camp during World War I, and remnants of that history — old rifle ranges and camp foundations — still dot the landscape, giving hikers unexpected discoveries along the way.
The trail network here is the main draw. A series of interconnected paths wind through hardwood forest and open meadows, offering routes suitable for casual walkers and more ambitious hikers alike. Mountain biking is popular on the wider trails, and the park sees steady use from trail runners who appreciate the rolling terrain without extreme elevation changes. Birdwatchers will find the mix of forest edge and interior habitat productive, particularly during spring and fall migration.
Unlike some of New York’s more manicured state parks, Blauvelt has a wilder, less-developed feel. There are no visitor centers or concession stands — just woods, trails, and solitude. Camping availability is not currently confirmed, so check with the Palisades Interstate Park Commission before planning an overnight trip.
Spring wildflower season and autumn foliage are the standout times to visit, though summer’s full canopy provides welcome shade on warm days. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow.
If you’re looking for an uncrowded escape with genuine woodland character, Blauvelt delivers without the fanfare.
