William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor stands as Michigan’s first urban state park, tucked along the Detroit River in Wayne County. At just 31 acres, it packs a remarkable amount into a compact footprint — a functioning harbor, a Great Lakes wetland, native prairie plantings, and a lighthouse that has become one of Detroit’s most recognizable landmarks.

The park offers something unusual: genuine nature threaded into a major city’s waterfront. A paved riverwalk connects the park to downtown Detroit, making it easy to reach on foot or by bike. The harbor accommodates transient boaters traveling the Great Lakes system, with slips, fuel, and pump-out facilities available seasonally. Anglers cast for walleye, smallmouth bass, and the occasional muskie right from the shoreline.

The reconstructed wetland area draws migrating birds and serves as an outdoor classroom for school groups and curious visitors alike. Walking trails wind through prairie grasses and wildflower plantings that change character with each season. Picnic areas and open green space give families room to spread out within earshot of the city.

Camping is not available at this park, but Detroit’s hotels and restaurants are minutes away — a tradeoff most visitors happily accept.

Visit between May and October for the best conditions. Late summer brings warm evenings ideal for watching freighters pass on the river. Spring and fall migration seasons reward birdwatchers with surprising sightings for an urban setting.
