Belle Isle Park
Michigan (Wayne County)
Belle Isle Park sits on a 982-acre island in the Detroit River, connected to the city by the historic MacArthur Bridge. As Michigan’s only island state park — and one located entirely within a major city — Belle Isle offers something rare: urban wilderness surrounded by water, with views of both the Detroit skyline and the Canadian shore of Windsor, Ontario.
The island packs a surprising amount into its footprint. The Belle Isle Aquarium, the oldest in the country, houses freshwater species from around the Great Lakes. The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory shelters tropical plants and orchids year-round, even when snow blankets the grounds outside. The Dossin Great Lakes Museum traces centuries of maritime history on the lakes that shaped the region.
Beyond the cultural draws, the park delivers on outdoor recreation. A 6.2-mile loop trail circles the island, popular with runners, cyclists, and walkers. Fishing along the shore and from the piers pulls in walleye, bass, and perch from the Detroit River. Kayakers and canoeists can launch from multiple points to explore the island’s coastline. In summer, a public swimming beach draws crowds on hot weekends.
Spring and fall are the best times to visit — mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and stunning views of the river during color change. Summer brings festivals and peak activity but also heavy weekend traffic across the bridge.
Belle Isle is a day-use park with no camping facilities. Arrive early on weekends for parking.
