Whipple Dam State Park
Pennsylvania (Huntingdon County County)
Tucked into the forested ridges of Huntingdon County, Whipple Dam State Park offers 256 acres of quiet Appalachian beauty centered around Whipple Lake. Established in 1928, this small but well-loved park sits in the shadow of Tussey Mountain, where hemlock-shaded trails wind through a landscape shaped by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s.
The 22-acre lake is the heart of the park. In summer, a sandy beach draws families for swimming, and the calm waters are ideal for non-motorized boating — canoes, kayaks, and rowboats glide easily across the surface. Anglers find warmwater species including bass and panfish, with stocked trout in the feeder streams each spring.
Hiking trails connect Whipple Dam to the adjacent Rothrock State Forest, opening up miles of additional terrain for those who want to stretch their legs beyond the park boundary. The Laurel Run Trail follows the creek through thick stands of mountain laurel that bloom in late May and early June, making late spring one of the best times to visit. Fall brings vivid foliage across the surrounding ridges, typically peaking in mid-October.
Picnic pavilions and open grassy areas make the park a natural gathering spot for day use. Winter visitors enjoy cross-country skiing and ice fishing when conditions allow.
Whipple Dam rewards those looking for a low-key outdoor experience without crowds. It’s the kind of Pennsylvania park where a slow afternoon by the water is the whole point.
