Tucked into the Allegheny Plateau in Centre County, Black Moshannon State Park takes its name from the dark, tannin-stained waters of Black Moshannon Creek — a striking natural feature created by the surrounding bog’s sphagnum moss and decaying plant matter. Established in 1937 across 3,394 acres, the park preserves one of Pennsylvania’s most ecologically distinctive landscapes: a rare boreal bog ecosystem more commonly found hundreds of miles to the north.

The 250-acre Black Moshannon Lake anchors the park, offering excellent fishing for warm-water species like bass and panfish, along with a sandy beach for swimming during summer months. Paddlers will find the lake and bog ideal for kayaking and canoeing, where carnivorous sundew plants and wild orchids line the water’s edge. Over 20 miles of trails wind through dense hemlock forests and open bog meadows, serving hikers in warmer months and cross-country skiers when snow blankets the plateau.

Birders flock here for the unusual boreal species — including saw-whet owls and hermit thrushes — that thrive in the bog habitat. The park’s elevation (around 2,000 feet) keeps summer temperatures noticeably cooler than the surrounding valleys, making it a welcome retreat from July heat.

Late spring through early fall is prime visiting season, with peak fall color typically arriving in mid-October. Winter brings reliable snowfall for skiing and snowshoeing. The bog boardwalk is a must-walk regardless of season — few places in Pennsylvania offer anything quite like it.
