Thompson’s Harbor State Park

Thompson’s Harbor State Park stretches across 5,109 acres along the Lake Huron shoreline in Presque Isle County, making it one of Michigan’s most secluded and undeveloped state parks. That remoteness is exactly the point — this is a place for visitors who want to experience Michigan’s northern coast without crowds, pavement, or gift shops.

The park protects a striking landscape of rocky Lake Huron shoreline, boreal forest, and one of the few remaining stands of virgin white cedar in the Lower Peninsula. Threatened species like the dwarf lake iris thrive here, and the birding is exceptional, particularly during spring and fall migrations when warblers and raptors move through the corridor along the coast.

Hiking is the primary draw, with several miles of trails winding through dense forest to the shoreline. The paths are rustic and can be muddy in spring, so sturdy footwear is essential. Once you reach the water, you’ll find a rugged, rocky coast — beautiful for exploration and photography, though not ideal for swimming. Kayakers will find the coastline worth paddling, with limestone formations and quiet coves to discover.

There are no developed campgrounds or modern facilities within the park, so plan accordingly. Bring water, pack out what you bring in, and set your expectations for a true backcountry experience.

The best time to visit is late May through October, when trails are passable and wildflowers are in bloom. Summer weekdays offer near-total solitude — a rarity this close to the Lake Huron shore.
