Built in 1889 and relocated to Jeffrey’s Hook beneath the George Washington Bridge in 1921, this 40-foot steel lighthouse guided Hudson River traffic until decommissioned in 1948. It gained fame through Hildegarde Swift’s beloved 1942 children’s book *The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge*, which saved it from demolition when public outcry led to its preservation.
Now a New York City landmark in Fort Washington Park, the lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing, though the NYC Parks Department hosts occasional festivals nearby.
