Prineville Reservoir State Park

Tucked into the high desert of Central Oregon, Prineville Reservoir State Park sits along the shores of a striking blue reservoir fed by the Crooked River. The landscape here is pure eastern Oregon — juniper-studded hillsides, rust-colored rimrock, and wide-open skies that feel a world away from the green valleys west of the Cascades.

The reservoir is the main draw, offering excellent fishing for bass, trout, and crappie. Anglers come back year after year for the smallmouth bass fishing in particular, which ranks among the best in the state. Boating, waterskiing, and swimming round out the on-water options, with a boat ramp providing easy access.

On land, hiking trails wind through the surrounding sagebrush hills, offering views across the reservoir and the Ochoco foothills beyond. Birders will find osprey, eagles, and great blue herons along the shoreline, especially in the quieter coves.

The park has two campground areas with full-hookup RV sites, tent sites, and rustic cabins — making it accessible whether you’re hauling a fifth wheel or traveling light. Sites along the waterfront go fast in summer, so reservations are strongly recommended.

The best window runs from late May through September, when temperatures climb into the 80s and 90s and the water warms enough for comfortable swimming. Spring and fall bring cooler days, smaller crowds, and productive fishing conditions.

Prineville Reservoir is one of Central Oregon’s quieter gems — less trafficked than the Bend-area lakes but every bit as rewarding for those willing to make the drive.
