Presque Isle State Park stretches across a sandy, recurved spit that arcs into Lake Erie, forming one of the most unique geological formations in Pennsylvania. This 3,200-acre peninsula — the only “sand spit” of its kind in the Great Lakes — has been drawing visitors since the park’s establishment in 1921, and it remains Erie County’s most beloved natural landmark.

Seven miles of sandy beaches line the park’s northern shore, making it the closest thing Pennsylvania has to an ocean coastline. Swimmers, sunbathers, and beachcombers spread across 13 distinct beach areas, each with its own character — from the calm, shallow waters of Beach 1 near the entrance to the wilder, wind-swept stretches further out on the peninsula. Beyond the beaches, Presque Isle offers over 13 miles of multi-use trails winding through diverse ecological zones — old-growth forest, marshland, lagoons, and dune communities. Birdwatchers flock here during spring and fall migration, as the peninsula sits along a major flyway and has logged over 340 bird species. Kayakers and canoers explore the sheltered interior lagoons, while anglers cast for perch, walleye, and steelhead depending on the season.

Winter transforms the park into a quieter destination for cross-country skiing and ice fishing, with dramatic ice formations along the shore.

Visitors should note that the park fills quickly on summer weekends — arriving early is essential for securing beach parking. The sunsets over Lake Erie alone are worth the trip.
