R. B. Winter State Park
Pennsylvania (Union County County)
Nestled in the forested ridges of Union County, R. B. Winter State Park offers 695 acres of rugged Appalachian beauty that has drawn visitors since its establishment in 1933. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, the park retains much of its original rustic character, blending Depression-era stonework with the surrounding hemlock and hardwood forests.
The centerpiece of the park is Halfway Lake, a seven-acre impoundment fed by cold mountain streams. In summer, the guarded swimming beach draws families looking to cool off, while anglers work the shoreline for trout and panfish. A network of hiking trails winds through the surrounding hills, ranging from easy lakeside strolls to steeper climbs along the ridgelines that reward with views of the Bald Eagle State Forest, which surrounds the park on all sides.
Winter transforms the park into a quiet retreat for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing along snow-covered trails. Spring brings wildflower displays beneath the forest canopy, and fall delivers some of central Pennsylvania’s finest foliage viewing.
The park’s relatively compact size makes it ideal for a day trip from nearby Lewisburg or Mifflinburg, though visitors looking to extend their stay should check with the park office for current camping availability and options. Picnic pavilions and open areas provide plenty of space for group gatherings.
R. B. Winter feels like a well-kept secret — close enough to reach easily from central Pennsylvania’s valleys, yet remote enough to feel like genuine backcountry.
