Au Sable North Pierhead Light

Standing at the mouth of the Au Sable River where it meets Lake Huron, the Au Sable North Pierhead Light has guided mariners along Michigan’s northeastern coastline since 1907. The compact red steel tower rises roughly 35 feet above the concrete pier, its light still active and maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. The lighthouse is not open to the public, so visitors cannot climb the tower, but it remains a favorite subject for photographers — especially at sunrise, when Lake Huron’s horizon glows behind the pierhead. The surrounding area offers excellent fishing, sandy Lake Huron beaches, and access to the Huron National Forest. Nearby Oscoda provides dining, lodging, and the scenic River Road National Scenic Byway.
