Mississippi Blufflands State Trail follows the dramatic limestone bluffs and river valleys of southeastern Minnesota, where the Mississippi River has carved some of the most striking terrain in the Upper Midwest. The trail traces a corridor through the Driftless Area — a region that escaped the last glaciation, leaving behind steep bluffs, deep coulees, and rugged topography unlike anything else in the state.

The trail connects communities along the Mississippi, offering hikers and cyclists sweeping views of the river valley from blufftop vantage points. In autumn, the hardwood forests blanketing these bluffs erupt in color — reds, oranges, and golds reflecting off the river below. Spring brings wildflower displays on the bluff prairies, including native goat prairies clinging to south-facing slopes.

Birdwatching is exceptional here, particularly during spring and fall migration along the Mississippi Flyway. Eagles are a common sight year-round, nesting on the bluffs and fishing the river. The surrounding area also supports excellent trout fishing in cold spring-fed streams that cut through the valleys.

Fall is the standout season for visiting, when the foliage peaks and the trails are less crowded, though spring wildflower season runs a close second. Summer brings warm, humid conditions but longer daylight hours for exploring.

The trail passes near several small river towns with local dining and lodging options. Pack water and be prepared for elevation changes — the bluff terrain is more demanding than typical Minnesota trails, but the views from the ridgeline make every climb worthwhile.
