Tucked into the bluff country of Houston County in southeastern Minnesota, Beaver Creek Valley State Park protects 715 acres of one of the state’s most ecologically rich spring-fed valleys. The park’s cold, clear streams — fed by underground springs flowing through karst limestone — support a native brook trout population, making it one of the few places in Minnesota where anglers can cast for wild brookies in their natural habitat.

The East Beaver Creek winds through the valley floor beneath towering limestone bluffs and dense hardwood forest. Spring brings a spectacular wildflower display — hepatica, bloodroot, and trillium carpet the forest floor — while the sheltered valley creates a microclimate that supports plant species rarely found elsewhere in the state. Birders prize the park for its breeding population of Louisiana waterthrush and Acadian flycatcher, both uncommon in Minnesota.

Hikers can explore roughly eight miles of trails that climb from the creek bottom to bluff-top overlooks with sweeping views of the surrounding driftless landscape. In winter, these trails convert to cross-country skiing routes through quiet, snow-covered forest.

The park offers a small, peaceful campground — a welcome contrast to the busier state parks further north. Sites are shaded and well-spaced along the creek.

Visit in mid-May for peak wildflowers and trout season, or in October when the bluff country hardwoods put on one of southern Minnesota’s finest fall color shows. This is a park that rewards those willing to seek it out.
