Carley State Park
Minnesota (Wabasha County)
Tucked into the rolling bluff country of Wabasha County, Carley State Park is a quiet gem in southeastern Minnesota’s Driftless Area — a landscape that escaped the last glaciers and kept its dramatic, deeply carved valleys. At 209 acres, it’s one of the state’s smaller parks, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in character.
The Whitewater River’s north fork runs through the park, winding beneath towering hardwoods and limestone bluffs. In spring, the valley floor erupts with wildflowers — Virginia bluebells, trillium, and hepatica carpet the woodland in one of the most striking ephemeral displays in the state. This alone draws hikers from across the region each April and May.
Several miles of trails follow the river and climb into the surrounding bluffs, offering a mix of easy streamside walks and moderate uphill stretches with rewarding views of the valley. Cross-country skiing takes over in winter, when the sheltered ravines hold snow well after surrounding areas have thawed.
The park has a rustic campground, though facilities are basic — expect a peaceful, no-frills experience closer to backcountry camping than resort-style sites. That simplicity is part of the appeal. You won’t find crowds here, even on summer weekends.
Best time to visit is late April through mid-May for the wildflower peak, or mid-October when the hardwood canopy turns. Carley rewards anyone willing to trade amenities for solitude and one of Minnesota’s most beautiful small valleys.
