Great River Bluffs State Park

Perched high above the Mississippi River Valley in Winona County, Great River Bluffs State Park spans 2,122 acres of dramatic bluffland terrain in southeastern Minnesota. The park’s defining feature is its stunning overlooks — King’s Bluff and Queen’s Bluff offer sweeping panoramic views of the river valley hundreds of feet below, where the Mississippi winds through a maze of backwater channels, islands, and floodplain forest.

The landscape here is shaped by thousands of years of erosion, creating steep limestone bluffs cloaked in hardwood forest and punctuated by rare goat prairies — dry, south-facing slopes too steep for trees, where native grasses and wildflowers cling to thin soil. These fragile ecosystems support plant communities found almost nowhere else in the state.

Hiking is the main draw, with roughly six miles of trails ranging from easy prairie loops to moderately challenging bluff-top routes. The King’s Bluff Trail is the must-do — a short but rewarding trek to the park’s highest overlook. In winter, the trails convert to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing paths through quiet, snow-draped forest.

Fall is arguably the best time to visit, when the bluff country erupts in color and the valley views reach peak drama. Spring wildflower season runs a close second, with trillium and hepatica carpeting the forest floor.

Birdwatchers will find excellent raptor viewing during migration season, as hawks and eagles ride thermals along the bluff line. Bring binoculars and sturdy footwear — the terrain earns its name.
